ARTISTS UNITED

From Social Justice Wiki

ARTISTS UNITED is an organization formed by Chicago writers, painters, sculptors, composers, and performing artists. They "share a mutual concern for the position of the artist and his creative work in contemporary American society."

On December 28, 1969, Chicago artists were invited to the South Side community Arts Center to take part in “an evening of Readings, Songs, Pictures, and Poems, dedicated to the living ideals of Fred Hampton and Mark Clark, murdered leaders of the Illinois Black Panther Party.” The poem "My Brother Is Dead" was one of many pieces in that booklet created as a direct result of that Dec. 28th meeting. The writers and other Chicago artists aim was "to reach an audience who will become effectively involved in implementing those ideals."
