Kwame Spearman is a junior majoring in political science and history. He is from Denver, Colorado and attended East High School. At Columbia, Spearman has recently become interested in various social movements throughout American history. This semester alone, Spearman is taking three courses that specifically deal with organized and radical change in America’s history.

Therefore, Columbia’s expansion, specifically the Coalition to Preserve Community is right on track for Spearman’s new line of work. In addition to his coursework, Spearman is the Columbia College Junior Class President and the President of Columbia Television. He is also a first year Resident Advisor. His plans are quite foggy at the moment, but Spearman believes he will always work for the betterment of his community, in some capacity.

More immediately, Spearman is pursuing various graduate programs and ready to begin work on his senior thesis. This summer, Spearman hopes to intern with the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone in Harlem.

Julia Chiverton is a junior at Barnard College, majoring in biology and hopes to attend veterinary school after graduating from Barnard next May. Currently, Julia is the Entertainment Chair of the Columbia University Dance Marathon, which raises money for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. She is also a teaching assistant for introductory biology at Barnard and works as a surgery aide in the operating room at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan.

Julia one day hopes to work at the Animal Medical Center as a veterinary surgeon, but until then she is enjoying her liberal arts education and the opportunities she has to explore social justice and activism in classes such as Black Movements in the U.S.

Brooklyn Smith is a Columbia College sophomore, majoring in comparative ethnic studies and human rights. Brooklyn was born and raised in Columbus Ohio, where she attended high school at the Columbus School for Girls.

This year, Brooklyn has realized she has a sincere passion in contemporary social movements. Enrolling in Professor Kelley’s Black Movements course, and listening to the various class speakers has only furthered Brooklyn’s desire to “join the cause” and volunteer for grass-roots community organizations.

Currently, she is looking to join various campus and New York based operations, focused on the betterment of the community. Outside of working on social movements, Brooklyn plays club soccer, enjoys Lemonade and is most proud of her freedom in college.

Brooklyn is unsure of her future plans and ambitions, but she wouldn’t mind continuing her education in New York City and further involving herself within the diverse Manhattan communitiy. Apropos, Brooklyn is quite interested in learning more about New York’s poltical structure.
