Cyril Lionel Robert (C. L. R.) James (1901-1989) is in many ways the epitome of the activist-intellectual. A figure driven by a desire for perpetual praxis, James never attempted to compartmentalize his life. He never tried to separate his ideas from his actions, his political life from his love life, his love of the arts from his love of cricket. For someone whose life traversed multiple continents and embraced myriad fights for social justice, James ceaselessly sought an integrated, inter-connected existence.

This website is intended as an introduction to his life as well as an examination of three important intellectual threads that were interwoven through his life—race, Marxism, and feminism. We hope that you enjoy these essays and are inspired to live a life like James of active intellectualism and intellectual activism.
