Criticism of Civil Rights Movement
From Social Justice Wiki
Carmichael and Hamilton also critique past approaches to the civil rights movement that have failed to liberate blacks such as nonviolence, integration, and coalitions with supposed sympathizers. They call for self-defense to illustrate that blacks will not serve as whipping posts, however this is not the critical message they are trying to impart. More importantly, the authors attempt to impart the idea that the former ideologies of the civil rights movement have reached their threshold and a new movement needs to emerge. Integration, then, is not congruent with this rhetoric of Black Power as it espouses middle class values of assimilation and denies black heritage. Black Power delves fully into the issues of coalitions between the black community and non-black organizations. The text criticizes allegiances with white liberals, the labor party, and democrats as being inherently imbalanced and unstable. The authors cite examples of betrayals by these groups, but are not diametrically opposed to coalitions, but rather discourage them while the black movement is still in its formative years. The Black Power movement’s interests do not fully overlap with any other organization, and since the movement is not as secure it is advisable to limit it to only African Americans. White people are not totally excluded in this system, but rather have a clear role within their own communities as educators, organizers, and supporters.
