Expansion
In February of 2003 Columbia announced plans to expand its campus into the West Harlem neighborhood known as Manhattanville. The proposed expansion would take place five blocks uptown from the Morningside Heights campus, from 125th to 133rd streets west of Broadway.
Columbia’s proposals which are set to take place within the next ten to twelve years would add valuable research space and new dormitories but would inevitably ensure the gentrification of the area. Without expanding into neighboring areas, Columbia’s administration claims that the University would be unable to compete with other elite universities. Since the announcement, numerous community activist groups, labor rights coalitions, and tenant rights groups have reacted against the largest expansion proposed by Columbia since 1896.
