Located in Manhattan's Region 9 district, the Facing History School will open its doors this fall to 108 ninth graders as a part of the Park West Educational Consortium.

Gillian Smith, the future principle of the school, asks potential students and parents to consider the Facing History School:
  • Take a minute to think about the title of our school. What does it mean to “face history”? Too often, students think history is boring. In fact, too often students feel that many of their classes are boring. At The Facing History School, our courses will be exciting, rigorous, and relevant.
Our school will ask important questions: What can we learn from the choices of people who came before us, so we can avoid the violence, hatred, and inequality that appears time and again in human society? How can we work together to create communities that are open-minded and fair?
FHS aims to prepare you for success in college and work and to prepare you to be participants and leaders in your neighborhoods and beyond. The Facing History School will provide all our students with a safe, welcoming space to grow intellectually, creatively, and morally. We want to support you to take risks, develop your unique voice, and learn from your choices. We want to support you as you decide what you believe in, how you will use your skills and talents to express those beliefs, and how you can have an impact in your local community, the nation, and the world.
In choosing FHS, you choose to join a dynamic, exciting learning community. In choosing FHS, you choose to think deeply about yesterday, today, and tomorrow. In choosing FHS, you choose to think about how to make a difference.
