Omali Yeshitela, formerly know as Joe Waller, has been active in seeking justice for peopls of African descent for a large part of his life. During the Civil Rights Movement he a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and most recently and most notably founded the Uhuru Movement (see: National People's Democratic Uhuru Movement based out of his hometown, St. Petersburg, Florida. He also founded Citizens United for a Shared Prosperity (CUSP), a more locally-focused St.Petersburg group working towrads creating a peaceful environment "based on shared prosperity and social justice."

Yeshitela ran for Mayor in St.Petersburg (2001) and won all but one of the city's African-American and mixed precincts and owns W & Associates, a consulating practice dedicated to helping non-profit organizations get off the ground and focuses on issue campaigns. He is also on currently on tour speaking about the Uhuru Movement.
