Whether they are fighting against the increase in tuition rates, fighting for such rights as education and healthcare, or fighting for any and every other form of social injustice, the Student Liberation Action Movement, better known as SLAM, has been active within the community for the past ten years. SLAM's roots extend back to a protest against then Mayor Giuliano's tuition hikes with 20,000 CUNY students marching on City Hall on March 23, 1995; a battle that they continue to fight to this day. This organization grew out of the CUNY Coalition and has its basis at Hunter College, located on the East Side of Manhattan. SLAM has its name all over many student and social justice movements that have occured within the New York City community that have been noted. One of which was the takeover of Hunter's University Student Government, USG, in an election in which they won by a considerable margin. (See SLAM Right Now).

What makes SLAM so effective is the fact that they do not restrict their work to solely their campus and it's students, but extend it to the whole community. They strongly believe that a struggle is a struggle regardless of where or what it is. This is why they continue to give action and voice to those who are being oppressed and treated unjustly. Through their social action, SLAM has enriched greatly the campus life of Hunter College for its students. They can also add standing up to their and other school's administrations, presidents, and city mayors to their resume.

"It's hard to fight the power when you're in bed with them..."
