Bio: I am Remy Monteko-Sherman. I grew up in San Francisco, California, went to Colorado College, in Colorado Springs for a year, and then transferred to Barnard College in New York City this past fall. My politics, interests, and passions have been largely shaped by these places. Growing up in the Haight-Ashbury of San Francisco it was by default that I became interested in issues of upholding justice and equality. I began my activist career working for Literacy for Environmental Justice in SF. With them, I attempted to shut down a out-dated and dangerous power plant in the largely black neighborhood of Hunter's Point. When I left California to attend Colorado College, I found very little political or social activism. I became determined to surround myself with free-thinkers and so I transferred to a school in New York City. Here, I have been interning with the Environmental Law and Justice Project and teaching ESL classes. I am finding my experience fulfilling, but I am always searching for new ways to make things fair. To be honest, I'm still confused about why I care so much about justice. All I know is that I feel most alive when I'm furthering something I believe in. I would say that I'm characterized by a certain tension that exists within me--I often have the instinct to both fully engage and disengage from the struggle for justice. Throughout my life I've found solace and peace in nature (hence my move to Colorado), but every time I'm in the middle of nowhere for too long I yearn to do something, further a cause, and make something better besides myself. Maybe this bio was supposed to be a resume, organizations I've worked with, causes I support, ect...but the most important thing someone can learn about me is that I'm still very confused and passionate.
