Huey P. Newton

From Social Justice Wiki

Huey P. Newton, co-founder of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in 1966, became a powerful and controversial voice in the struggle for Black liberation and equality. His message of armed resistance and socialist reform resounded loudly both with Blacks frustrated with non-violence and other passive methods of resistance, as well as with police and other law enforcement officials who seemed determined to destroy his vision. Despite Newton’s own eventual downfall and subsequent murder in 1989, his ideas of progressive social uplift largely defined a generation searching for guidance, and his own complicated life gave everyone a prime example of what it meant to be human within the struggle.
