Huey P. Newton

Huey P. Newton, co-founder of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in 1966, became a powerful and controversial voice in the struggle for Black liberation and equality. His message of armed resistance and socialist reform resounded loudly both with Blacks frustrated with non-violence and other passive methods of resistance, as well as with police and other law enforcement officials who seemed determined to destroy his vision. Despite Newton�s own eventual downfall and subsequent murder in 1989, his ideas of progressive social uplift largely defined a generation searching for guidance, and his own complicated life gave everyone a prime example of what it meant to be human within the struggle.
